Blue Heron

I decided to experiment with water soluble oils on this blue heron. They are a wonderful medium - smooth and buttery like regular oils, but clean up with water and soap.

Carr painting

I have been painting quite a bit this past week but haven't taken any pictures of the finished product for posting. However, I did take a picture of this copy of an Emily Carr painting that I like. Her use of color was incredible, and the flowing forms evoke the swaying trees and the overpowering energy of the west coast rain forest. I find her style quite exciting, and plan to explore more of the Fauve/Group of Seven styles.

I thought I would experiment a bit and this is the result. I crumpled some Japanese paper so it was all covered with a fine web of creases, and then applied thin washes of acrylic paint to create an image of a flower garden. Once dried, I smoothed out the paper, and used beeswax to adhere the paper to a small canvas board. The final image is 5x7.

Christmas presents

I had to take a few days away from my usual artistic activities to make presents for Christmas. Here is one example.

This silk bowl, made from silk hankies, looks like the flames of a fire.

Encaustic Collage

I enjoyed teaching the class so much, that I decided to make a few of my own. These six pictures are each 6 x 8 inches, and work nicely as a group.

Craft Class Images

I teach a class in a new technique in December each year, and this year the technique was encaustic collage. I based the class on a technique demonstrated on HGTV by Kim Bernard.
